What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a scientifically-proven and powerful approach to counselling that brings your body into the conversation. Our bodies hold so much information, including trauma, and we can build a healing relationship with ourselves that includes listening to our bodies.

While you and I talk, we also work with the sensations in your body and your impulse to move. We support your body to process and release through a variety of techniques, and build your capacity to have meaningful boundaries and express your needs.

I love working with caring, thoughtful people who have a vision for the world, and I love sharing the nervous system education I've learned along my own journey of healing from burnout and crisis.

One of the main questions I get in consultations and conversations with people is 'how does somatic therapy work?' To be honest, it's something you have to experience to understand, and I believe our scientific understanding of the nervous system and the physiological aspect of somatics only scratches the surface of how this practice works.

Somatic work celebrates our interconnectedness, within ourselves as mind-body-spirit, and with each other in community. This profound way of connecting to ourselves has drawn from the long-held beliefs of wisdom traditions and Indigenous cultures throughout the world, and is now being acknowledged and understood by our modern-day science and psychology paradigms.

Somatic therapy is trauma therapy

"Our bodies hold everything that has ever happened to us, and they also hold the instructions for returning to our innate wholeness."

This is something my first teacher in Relational Somatic Therapy, Mariah Moser, would often say.

Contemporary somatic therapy was originally designed as an effective trauma therapy for PTSD. My practice is also influenced by Internal Family Systems (IFS), nervous system theories, Attachment Theory, systems analysis (anti-oppression work), spirituality, nature, and metaphysics.

Somatic therapy helps us look inside to find our inner resources and renegotiate trauma.

Through mindfulness, nervous system regulation, and re-patterning, somatic therapy can help to provide relief from long-standing discomfort and emotional pain resulting from acute or developmental trauma.

Seeking out trauma therapy can feel like a big step, and I honour your courage. It takes a lot to reach out and seek support for moving through big feelings and scary memories.

In somatic therapy, we take it slow.

You don't have to retell every story (unless you want to). You don't even have to remember the details. Somatic therapy is an effective trauma therapy for PTSD that offers your system new information, communicating to your body that 'it's over now.'

Somatic Therapy in Surrey, BC

I offer in-person somatic therapy, in-person counselling sessions, online somatic therapy, and online counselling sessions.

For in-person sessions, my office is now located in South Surrey / White Rock, British Columbia, just across from Choices market on King George Boulevard. It is a quiet location at the edge of South Surrey with free parking and beautiful trails nearby!

I have availability for in-person somatic therapy sessions in Surrey on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you are looking for online somatic therapy sessions, I offer online somatic therapy sessions on Thursdays and Fridays.

If you cannot find a booking time in my Janeapp calendar, please reach out to me so I can see if there are any additional availabilities or cancellations.
